First Confession: I am a wannabe Physicist, meaning that I am currently a Ph.D candidate. I love being in a field where we are constantly pushing and questioning the known laws of the Universe. Physics is a very captivating subject, especially Astroparticle Physics, which is my bread and butter. And although I truly love what I do, there are times when I want to run screaming from my office, hop a plane to some exotic place and never talk about gamma-rays or particles of any kind ever again. So what does an average girl do to escape her left brain tendencies? I run, paint, fish, ski, bike, do yoga...........and I bake!
Second Confession: I am a self-taught baker. I have no formal training whatsoever. In fact, just 10 years ago when I started College, I could barely make boxed macaroni and cheese. My brother ironically is the culinary genius in the family. Growing up, he was the one who usually made my lunches, throwing together turkey sandwiches with cranberry chutney, arugula and provolone with ease. I on the other hand could barely remember to throw an apple in my backpack when he went off to College. He was the one who worked as a Pastry chef for our College's catering service, while I could barely make a batch of edible cookies. But fast forward two years, when I was in a campus apartment with a decent kitchen, and my stress level had sky rocketed to Alpha Centauri, I finally looked for an outlet. I ran on the schools Cross-Country and Track teams, so there were always hungry runners milling around my apartment. So I thought, what the heck......I'll try baking. By the end of my undergraduate career, I had mastered my chocolate chip cookie recipe and began to search out more complicated recipes. I found that baking, and cooking, could be an artistic outlet. A place where I could experiment with different flavors and techniques without the fear of a bad grade or botched assignment. Baking has become a way to feed my own soul after it has been bogged down with papers, deadlines, presentations and exams. Plus....BONUS, I get to share what I create with those around me and bring a little sweetness to the lives of others.
Third Confession: This is all new to me. Writing a blog and sharing my experiences is a whole new world, but it's something that I'm very excited about! So stay tuned for new recipes, stories, and of course Confessions and Confections of a Physicist!
Until next time!
